EU-USA Bilateral Workshop on Toxigenic Fungi and Mycotoxins, July 2005

The EU-USA Bilateral Workshop on Toxigenic Fungi and Mycotoxins was held July 5-7, 2005 at the USDA/ARS, Southern Regional Research Center in New Orleans. Organized by Angelo Visconti and Deepak Bhatnagar, this meeting was part of the project, MYCOGLOBE (website http://mycoglobe.ispa.cnr.it),which has been approved by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework Program. This project aims to implement the recommendation from a wide range of European research projects on mycotoxin and toxigenic fungi by supporting, stimulating, and facilitating the participation and co-operation with countries that have signed a bilateral scientific and technological cooperation agreement with the European Union.

The primary aim of the EU-USA workshop was to provide a common platform and facilitate academic interactions among reputed scientists drawn from the EU and USA with the following specific objectives:

  • Information dissemination on (a) technical and economic problems encountered in EU and US with regard to mycotoxin contamination; (b) current state of the mycotoxin research; and (c) evolving future scientific strategies in combating fungal invasion and mycotoxin contamination of foods and feeds, as well as development of rapid detection methods for mycotoxins and toxigenic fungi.
  • Designing and ushering collaborative Research and Development activities of mutual interest.

Also discussed at the meeting was the formation of the International Society for Mycotoxicology, and the establishment of a journal for the society.

Financial and logistic support was provided by USDA Agriculture Research Service for hosting this meeting by Deepak Bhatnagar (USDA/ARS/SRRC). The financial commitment of European Commission (through the Mycoglobe project) and National Research Council (CNR), Italy was also very valuable in organizing this workshop.
